It was first discussed by the ancient Greek philosopher Anaxagoras in 500 BC. In 1903, it was dubbed “panspermia” by Nobel laureate Svante Arrhenius. His poetic vision was of plants and germs gently drifting through space by the mere pressure of starlight, so panspermia is Greek for “seeds everywhere.”
