WebThe reaction of sodium azide with nitriles to give 1 H -tetrazoles proceeds readily in water with zinc salts as catalysts. The scope of the reaction is quite broad; a variety of aromatic nitriles, activated and unactivated alkyl nitriles, substituted vinyl nitriles, thiocyanates, and cyanamides are all viable substrates. WebDPPA is always hit or miss in my experience. I've had reactions that work wonderfully with it and some that work horribly and never seem to go well (Mitsunobu reactions in particular). I'd say make the mesylate or tosylate and do a simple displacement with NaN3 (very easy reaction though you have to use sodium azide).
